Tarmo Peltokoski invites you to come on board with this symphony for a long journey, as the Orchestre du Capitole performs the complete symphonies of Vaughan Williams.
Ralph Vaughan Williams made a major contribution to the music of his country, even to the point of being buried alongside Henry Purcell. His first symphony exalts the beauty of the sea as well as its cruelty, hence the title A Sea Symphony. Soloists and choir sing almost without interruption: with Chen Reiss, Sir Simon Keenlyside and the Orfeón Donostiarra choir, the journey should be spectacular!
Italian and Russian melodies.
An accomplished musician (she is also a talented violinist), driven by an artistic ideal of absolute integrity, Krassimira Stoyanova will be revealing her extraordinary sensitivity for the first time at the Capitole in a selection of Italian and Russian melodies, intimate echoes of the great roles in her repertoire.

Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) The mythical couple of Orpheus and Eurydice is on the rocks: the unfaithful husband and wife cordially detest each other.
When Eurydice finally dies, Orpheus thinks he's rid of her! But public opinion forces him to bring his wife back from hell...
Satirical and hilarious, Offenbach's first great success, in which gods and heroes dance to the saucy rhythm of the French cancan, inaugurates a new and irreverently modern genre.
Opera-féerie in 4 acts.
By following the life of the composer and his emigrations, we also witness the upheaval of a world that is gradually shifting its cultural centre, while Germany is losing its footing.
With this show dedicated to Kurt Weill, he has found a repertoire that demands talent in his two favourite arts. Straddling the line between opera and cabaret, Weill's work, described as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis, has found its way into popular culture, with works such as Alabama Song, Speak Low and Mack the Knife.
Two ambassadors of choice will guide us on this musical journey: pianist Javier Perianes and conductor Josep Pons.
Ravel dreamt up a musical love affair with Spain, nourished by his mother's Basque culture. The Alborada del gracioso, the Rapsodie espagnole and the famous Boléro transport us, even though the composer never actually set foot on Iberian soil! His phantasmagorical vision of this warm land and its bewitching vapours echoes that of Manuel de Falla, the Andalusian composer who spent a great deal of time in Paris, paying homage to his native land with his compositions.
Tarmo Peltokoski, passionate about opera and the two composers Strauss and Mozart, is the musical director of a fascinating anthology, alongside Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg.
On the programme:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Overture to The Marriage of Figaro and arias
Richard Strauss - The Knight of the Rose, suite
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Overture to The Magic Flute and Così fan tutte arias
Richard Strauss - The Woman Without a Shadow, Symphonic Fantasy
Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759) Julius Caesar has just defeated Pompey in Egypt. But he had to contend with the Egyptian ruler Ptolemy, who was himself in a power struggle with his sister Cleopatra.
Caesar and Cleopatra's famous love affair is responsible for the happy ending of Handel's most inspired opera. The arias follow one another with inexhaustible melodic invention, and the many twists and turns sway the action between burlesque episodes and pathetic scenes.
Opera in 3 acts.
Francis Poulenc's La Voix humaine.
Cocteau, in a moving dramatic monologue, had imagined capturing the torments of a romantic break-up over the telephone.
Based on this admirable text, Poulenc composed a veritable lyrical tragedy for solo voice, a simply human voice at the height of solitude. The great French soprano Véronique Gens embodies Poulenc's masterpiece with all the artistry that characterises her: an accomplished mastery of declamation, a profound sense of poetry and incomparably emotional singing.
Christophe Manien - Piano

Van Cauwenbergh / Runacre-Temple / Bigonzetti Chansons dansées is both a tribute to French chanson à textes and to the traditional songs of southern Italy.
Flemish choreographer Ben van Cauwenbergh has chosen to illustrate nine unforgettable songs by Jacques Brel. Love, friendship, melancholy, lucidity, irreverence and the challenge of life are depicted in virtuoso and lyrical solos, pas de deux and pas de trois. English choreographer Morgann Runacre-Temple will add to Barbara's unique voice the depth of her emotions and feelings, and a declaration of love for life. Cantata, by Mauro Bigonzetti, is a piece bursting with life, joy, energy and colour, set to traditional songs from southern Italy, performed on stage by the women's group Assurd, Enza Pagliara and Enza Alessandra Prestia.
Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) During the Gauls' revolt against Rome, the Druidess Norma is abandoned by the secret father of her children, the Roman proconsul Pollione, who prefers the young priestess Adalgisa.
A summit of romantic bel canto, Bellini's masterpiece fascinates with the magic of its melodies and its archaic violence.

Léo Delibes (1836 - 1891) An achievement of ballet-pantomime, Coppélia, first performed on 25 May 1870, is one of the most representative ballets of the French school, based on the refined style taught at the Paris Opera Ballet.
Jean-Guillaume Bart, Étoile du Ballet de l'Opéra national de Paris and choreographer, will present his version of the work in the spirit of the tradition of great French ballet. He sees Swanilda as ‘a modern, determined and dynamic character. She leads the investigation, she leads the dance...’. Set to Delibes's melodious, colourful score, he will bring this strange and enchanting tale to life with sets by Antoine Fontaine and costumes by Christian Lacroix.
A major symphony concert conducted by Ton Koopman.

Romantic opera in 3 acts.
Great Madrigals by Monteverdi (1567-1643) With this Monteverdi programme, the Sacqueboutiers return to the absolute genius of the early Italian Baroque, the man who brought dramatic music, just created, to its apogee.
Excerpts from the sumptuous Books VII and VIII of the Madrigals, the pastoral ballet Tircis et Cloris, the intensely theatrical monologue of the Lettre amoureuse and the deeply moving Combat de Tancrède et Clorinde, somewhere between a madrigal and a miniature opera, take us to new heights of passion and poetry.
Francesco Cilea (1866-1950) In 18th-century Paris, the famous tragedienne Adrienne Lecouvreur falls in love with a seductive officer. But she will have everything to fear from a terrible rival.
Cilea's work, a masterpiece of Italian verism, is also a vibrant tribute to the art of drama and to actresses: didn't Sarah Bernhardt triumph at the theatre in the original French version?
Opera in 4 acts.
Carl Orff (1895-1982).
